Chapter 1
In chapter one, the prison door is described in great detail. After our discussions about the Puritans and the type of people they were, why do you suppose the prison door is described in such detail? Why was the prison one of the very first buildings established by the town?
The prison door is described in such detail to emphasize the fact that the Puritans had a very negative aspect of life. The Puritans believed that God was a wrathful, angry judge and man was born sinful. Having this in mind, the prison was the first built because they belived citizens were very sinful and should rightfully be punished.
ReplyDeleteThe prision door is described in such great detail because it is foreshadowed to be a centerpoint for the rest of the novel. The Puritans put such emphasis and importance on prisions because of their view that people were born naturally sinful and should be punished appropriately. Prisons were one of the first bulidings to be built in the town because they were considered extremely important by the Puritans in keeping the devil out and the people in order.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described in great detail because it is a symbol that will reoccur in the story. A prison is one of the first building to go up because the puritans viewed men as naturally sinful, and in this light they must set up punishment for the sinners.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described in much detail because they want to make the people more aware of how important the door is in the Puritan village. It was one of the first buildings up because it helped the people abide by the law more fearfully in knowing their is punishment if they don't. Through all of this you can tell religion was very important in each Puritan's life.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described in so much detail because the prison and the graveyard are the first two things that they built on the new land.Hawthorne wants to clue us in on how important these two things are in the village. The prison door will probally show up again some time in the story.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described is such detail because it's an important thing to the Puritan community. It was one of the first established buildings by the town because the Puritans believe all men are born sinful. So they have this prison, to throw all the sinful men into it.
ReplyDeleteThe Prison door was described in this detail to show how it come up again later in the novel. It also puts more thought into the way how the Puritans live. It was the first building because it shows how the Puritans feel about religion and how every one is born sinful.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the prison door was described in such detail in the first chapter because it is foreshadowing events to come also that it will be a main focal point later in the book. During the Puritan Era creating a pure society free of all evils, such as the devil and sins, was a high priority in the Puritan lifestyle. Prisons were built so that the Puritans could keep all of the sinners out of their society and keep the town in line.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the prison door is described in great detail because it will be a significant symbol throughout the novel. In the Puritan society, both the devil and sin was found in any place that was searched. It was important to rid the evils. The prison was one of the first buildings to be established because citizens needed a place to isolate the sinners. They did not want them to disrupt what they thought was their perfect society.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the prison door serves as a symbol to sinful actions. And the Puritans are known for their more "purity" seeking religion; therefore a prison could be useful in their society to achieve that kind of purity. That explains why a prison should be one of the first buildings established by the town as well, and since it's one of their main doctrines.
ReplyDeleteI think the prison door is describes in so much detail because it shows the sinful ways that are not accepted in the Puritan lifestyle. The prison was one of the first building established because it was a constant reminder of how the people should act and of the consequences they would face if they fell into sin.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described with so much detail because it signifies the importance of law and religion in a Puritan community. The prison was one of the first buildings set up by the Puritans because the puritans believed that sinners should face punishments for their wrong doings.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described in detail becasuse it shows the negativity of the Puritan culture. Also to emphasis the prison itself; which is one of the first buildings built in a new community. The prison symbolizes how all societies, regardless of their origional good intentions, eventually fall to the nature (sinfulness) of man.
ReplyDeleteI think the prison door was described in great detail because it was an important aspect to the puritan community because of sin. There belief in sin and god made the prison one of the first buildings in town.
ReplyDeleteThe door is described in such detail because of how dark the mood is set in the first chapter. The Puritans are also seen as a depressing and troubling society that believed you should be punished for any offense that you have against the theocracy. That is why the prison is one of the first buildings built by the poritans.
ReplyDeleteThe door is an important part of the puritan community because it
ReplyDeletesymbolizes the law and religious belief that all people are sinful, and it is considered a crime. It was built first to show people that it is not tolerated amongst them.
The prison door is described with such detail because they want you to realize the importance of the door in this novel. i believe that the prison was the first established because the puritans are such negative people, they think god is angry and revengeful and that people need to be punished for what they do wrong.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is symbolic obviously, which shows in the depth description the author gives. This description also reveals the importance of the door will show through out the novel. The puritan people believe man is born a sinner and they are very much concerned with the purity of their new town, which is why the prison is one of the first buildings built. The puritan people are very hypocritical and will stop at nothing... even innoncence to clense their town of evil. The door description will give off an evil dark mode but it also gives off humanity and innocence along with justice. Which is clearly seen with the description of the accused and the rose. The door does symbolize sin,but it also symbolized justice not being served to the innocent civilians.
ReplyDeletethe prison door is described in great detail because the author wants you to understand and recognize the reason for the door and to symbolize their belief that people in prisons were bad. i think the prison was one of the first buildings in the town because they had strong beliefs against people breaking laws and it was important to them that they had a place to put them.
ReplyDeleteThe reason that the door is described with such great detail is because the door is very significant and important. I think that the prison was one of the first things described because the Puritans had such strict and right and wrong ways that they had to make a place for the bad people.
ReplyDeleteThe door is described in such great detail because it puts emphasis on the importance of a prison in Puritan society. Puritans belived people were born sinful and they wanted their new society to be pure and Godly. The prison was one of the first buildings to be built because they were creating a Utopia and wanted those who interfered with that punished.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door's extremely detailed description serves to emphasize the gloom of the opening scene. the prison was the first building built in the town because of how negative the Puritain outlook on life is. They believed that man is naturally sinful.
ReplyDeleteThe detail of the prison door is so descriptive because it was the setting of the first part of the story. The Puritans took law-breaking and sinning very seriously. The Prison was one of the very first buildings established because the town needed a way to put away the sinners and evil-doers.
ReplyDeleteI believe the prison door is described in such great detail, to set the tone of the book. It gives the book a mournful and depressing feel. After our discussions in class the door being descried in great detail also buts a great emphasis on how important the prison is to the puritan lifestyle and religion. The Puritans believed that man was born sinful, so the prison being one of the very first buildings established is no big surprise. They wanted there town to be pure and sinless, so the town wanted to erase all sinful people as soon as possible. The prison being built first gave the town somewhere to put the guilty people and punish them.
ReplyDeleteThe puritans believed that everyone was born with no sin and that if you sinned you were to be seriously punished. I think the reasoning for the door being so detailed is because the reader should know how serious they took sinning and to understand that the prison door has a big significance in the story and the author is trying to really get the point across that the prison door is important. The prison was the first building built because of the strong beliefs that sinners should be punished and put away.
ReplyDeleteI believe the prison door is described in such great detail because sinning and lawbreaking were the two main things the puritans focussed on. There was no compassion, only punishment, making the prison to be one of the first buildings put up.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described in such detail because it will play a huge role in the rest of the story. The Jail emphasizes the fact that Puritans believed that men were created sinful and the Jail was one of the first buildings built because of this belief.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the prison door was emphized so much was to either forshadow what was going to happen to the puritans that did not follow the strick order of the poeple. Also i think that is was a symbol of what the purtians were about. The prison door could be shown as a fear. That if you do not follow all of the rules and the social standards then that is what you have to look forward too. I think that the prison was the first establishment in the town to set order. So that the poeple would come to to the town and be civilized.
ReplyDeleteI think the prison door is described with such great detail because it is going to play a huge role in the whole story. The Purtians in this time did not play around with lawbreaking and sinning. They think that the lawbreakers need to be punished at the hands of god.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door was described in such detail because it symbolized the puritan ways and how sinning wasn't acceptable. It was established in town because it would keep the sinners away from the rest of town. It shows what happens to the sinners and keeps puritan values in the townspeople's mind.
ReplyDeleteI believe the prison door was described in such detail because it helped set the mood of the rest of the story in which that it will be dark or eerie. Also that it represented the Puritans' views that sinning leads to huge punishments and that man is born with sins.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door was construed in such a manner that it emphasised dismal outlook inwhich the puritains viewed life. This being that man was a sinful beast, pre-destined for a life in hell or heaven; the prison being one of the first buildings the puritians constructed reflected this aspect.
ReplyDeleteI think the prison door is described in such full detail because it reflects on the strong Puritan beliefs of punishment for wrongful doings. The prison is a constant reminder that punishments will be made against sinful people.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the prison door was described with such detail because it sets the tone for the rest of the novel. It sybomlizes the Puritan's views on life and how strict they were on their beliefs. The prison was established in the town to conceal the wrong doers and their sinful actions.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door was described in such great detail because it reflects the Puritan outlook on life and their beliefs. They believe that people should be punished and are born sinful. It was the first structure built because Puritans believed sinners needed to be punished and evil should be contained.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door was described in great detail because the Puritans believed in not sinning. They also believed that if people did sin that they should be punished in some way or another. The door was built first because they believed so strongly in being punished for their sins and to keep the sinners contained.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if the Prison door was described so deeply to exemplify the way Puritans were so pessimistic with life. If the main thing in one town was a 'Prison-door' what would one think?! When building the prison door, this established a cold, discreet heart developed within Puritans. The Prison door was just an example of the negativity given by the local puritans.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door was described in great detail because the author wanted us to realize Purians thought that human have orignal sin and borned sinful; at the same time, it sets the tone for the chapter, and maybe the rest of the book.
ReplyDeleteI think Hawthorne described the door in such great detail because he wanted the reader to understand the strict religous views of the purtians. He wanted us to understand that the puritans believed that man was born sinful and would always be sinful. Which is why the prison was one of the first things built in the village. They wanted to be able to contain the people they thought were sinful and corrupt.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door stands for the sinful attitude presented by the Puritans and that man is born sinful. The door brings a sad, somber attitude toward the story but it offset by the rosebush the represents nature. The door could come into importance later in the story as a sinner could be imprisoned. ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described in great detail because it symbolizes something more then just a door. Hawthorne emphazises it because he wants us to know that in Purtian times people were born sinful and it was a lifetime goal to be rid of sin. The prison was one of the first places built in the town because it was very important to the foundation of the Purtian way of keeping Sin locked away and letting the "pure" live.
ReplyDeleteThe door is explained in great detail because Hawthorne wants to emphasize the importance of a jail in a puritan society. They punish the smallest crimes very harshly. They are very strict when it comes to punishment which is why it was one of the first buildings to be built.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door is described in great detail because it is a symbol that I believe will end up being a motif. A prison is one of the first building to go up because the puritans viewed men as naturally, and extremely sinful, and in this scenario the Puritans must of felt almost entilted to construct the prison.
ReplyDeleteSince the puritans viewed the man as sinful from birth, they believed that building a prison first would be appropriate, since they would all be punished eventually. Their view of God as angry, and judgmental is the reason for the great detail of the door.
ReplyDeleteI think the prison door was described in a great manor because it symbolizes the puritan ways and how sinning was condemed. It was put up in town to keep the sinners away from the rest of the town. it also shows was happens to sinners.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the prison door was described in great detail because the consequences of sinning and the bad things that will happen to you if you sin.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the prison door was described in great detail because the puritans were very religious and they wanted to keep people free from sin so this door was very important. Also it was put up in town first because if it were put up later people would sin more and think they could get away with it.
ReplyDeleteIt is my firm belief that the prison door represents the judgement of the sinful to the puritains and that it had great affect in their lives. As their lives move on they must pass that prison door and realize the sins they have committed.
ReplyDeleteChris Hirshburg
ReplyDeleteI think that the prison door was so elaborately described because the Puritan lifestyle gave no room for breaking the rules, and if you did you would be severely punished.
the prison door was describe how it was because of the strict beliefs of the Puritans. The prison was built first because all of the sinners needed to be contained.
ReplyDeleteThe detail in which the prison door was described is a hint to foreshadowing and how the prison was one of the first buildings to demonstrates the puritans beliefs that no man is above sin and crime.
ReplyDeleteThe prison door was desribed in such detail because I believe that it will forshadow further events that will happen in the story. A prison is one of the first buildings to be built in the town. This is because Puritans believed that citizens who commited a crime should be contained in prison.
ReplyDeleteThe detail of the prison door is described very vibrantly. The reason for the prison is obveously to hold prisoners, but the way that the puritan religion is held up, it almost seems as if everyone is prisoner in this society. Being in the prison is just one small step from what everyone feels outside of the prison. The prison door reflects how puritans veiw themselves as a people.
ReplyDeleteKamari McCray 2nd - I think the prison door is described in such detail to reflect the traits of the town. The door represents the strict Puritan society and what a cold dark place it is. It was one of the very first places built because it was important to have a prison in all colonies. They also wanted to make sure they had a place ready for sinners and evil doers when they had to be punished.
ReplyDeleteThe prison was described with such detail because it was the main purpose in their town. The first thing the people built in that town was a jail because they knew their will be a lot of bad people in that town. The door was described with such detail because they knew it will open a lot for new prisoners.
