Chapters 4 -6

How are Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and Hester all described at the beginning and what is their relationship and who is to blame? Why doesn't Hester confess the name of the father and why does she not leave the village after she leaves prison? Do you think she is justified in her actions? Explain :)

  1. Dimmesdale is the young minister, renowned for his eloquence, who questions Hester while she is on the scaffold. Chillingworth is the assumed name of Hester's husband who stayed back in england while she came to America. Chillingworth is to blame because he is an old, mishappen man who isn't very well suited to keeping a young wife happy. Hester doesn't confess the name of the father because she wants the child to seek a heavenly father and not an earthly one. She decides to stay in the village because she wants to stay in an abandoned cabin at the edge of town. I think she is justfied in her actions because old men generally can't keep young wives happy when one of them isn't in it for love.

  2. Dimmesdale is an intellegent, young minister who gives a speech to Hester as she is on the scaffold about confessing the name of the father. However, he is the true father of Hester's baby. Chillingworth is described as the husband of Hester who stayed in England while she traveled to America. Hester is described as beautiful and lady like. Chillingworth is to blame because a scholar like him cannot keep a young, beautiful lady happy. Hester does not confess because she says, "my child will seek a heavenly father, and will never know an earthly one." She stays in the village because she feels she should deal with the consequences of the crime. I do think she is justified in her actions because she is being mature and facing her problems instead of running away.

Hester is a young beautiful lady who had an affair. Chillingsworth is to blame because he cannot keep his wife happy. Hester does not confess to who the father is because she does not want her daughter to know. She stays in town because she wants to face the consequences that came from the crime she committed. I believe that her actions are justified because she is taking responsibility for what she has done.

  4. Dimmesdale is a young reverend known for his eloquence and theological expertise. Hester is described as a young beautiful lady who is surrounded by an angry crowd. Chillingworth is described as an old man who is dressed in a weird way: a combination of English clothing and Native American dress. We learn in the following chapters that Chillingworth is Hester's husband and Dimmesdale is the father. Chillingworth is the one to blame since he cannot and did not keep his young wife happy, hence making her turn to another man. She does not want to say who the father is because she wants the protect the man's identity. She does not want to leave town for three reasons. First she believes that she should stay in the town where the father is. Second, she wants to correct her mistakes in the same place where they were done. And third, a lot of things happened that changed her life in this place, it got so hard to leave it. I think she is justified in her actions because it shows that she is ready to prove everyone wrong, and that she is a strong person and not a quiter.

  5. Dimmesdale is the minister who publically chastises Hester, the young beautiful woman who committed adultry, for her actions and her refusal to reveal the father of her child even when the father turns out to be him. Chillingworth turns out to be Hester's husband who has arrived in America but is in disguise. All three of them are to blame for their relationship because of the actions that they have done. Hester will not reveal the father of her child because she doesn't want to father to get in trouble for his actions and she does not wish her child to have a father. Hester doesn't leave the village after she is released from jail because she doesn't want to leave her home, the place where the father of her child is, and because she wants to redeem herself of her actions. Her actions are justified because it proves that her character is good because she refuses to run away from her past and her problems.

  6. Dimmesdale is the young minister who is very intelligent and is Pearls father. Chillingworth is Hesters husband who has finally come to America, He comes to the vilage in disguise. All three people are to blame in the situation. I think Hester does not tell the name of the babys father because she loves him and knows what will happen to him if he is revealed. She does not leave after she is released from prison because it is the place where she grew up, and where she feels she can clean herslef from the crime she has commited. Hesters actions are jusified because it proves she has a goood character and wants to be sinless.

  7. Dimmesdale is a young respected minister who was Hester's adulty partener. Chillingworth is a fake name made up by Hester's husband who does not want the town to know who he is. He is devoted to book and is now devoting his time to finding the who Hester's partener is. All three are to blame. Chillingworth never paid much attention to Hester and by sending her off that is just inviting her to go looking for affection and love elsewhere. Then Hester and Dimmesdale obviously knew what they were doing was wrong but they went ahead anyways because they cared for eachother. Therefore, because of the love they had, Hester kept Dimmesdale out of the blame to protect him. This may be a part of why she doesn't leave. Hester still feels attached to Dimmesdale. The main reason, i believe, is her -almost unconcious- devotion to her religion. She believes she must live out her earthly punishment in order to re-obtain any level of her origional purity in Heaven. These actions are not so much justified as they should be expected. She is part of the Puritan society and is attached to their expectations still, even though in someways she rebels her society.

  8. Dimmesdale is a young minister who tries to persuade Hester into confessing her child's father. He is also the man in which Hester committed adultery with. Chillingworth which is a made up name, is Hester's husband who is in disguise and who has come to see Hester, he also tries to persuade her into telling him who the father of Pearl is; he seeks revenge and blames himself a little for Hesters betrayal . Hester refuses to tell anyone who the father is because she loves him and rather suffer his agony and hers as well. She wants to protect him. Hester decides not to leave the village because she want to complete her punishment so that she will be forgiven and clean her soul of her sins in hopes that she will be permitted in heaven. Even though she committed adultery doesn't mean that she doesn't believe in God. She was born into a puritan community where she is expected to live her life in devotion to God and repent for what she has done.

  9. Dimmesdale is a clergyman that is young and smart, he tries to make hester confess to who the father of the child is, however he is the father. Chillingworth is hester's husband who dresses funny as a disguise so no one knows it is him when he goes to see her. Hester is the woman who commited adultery and refuses to tell anyone who the father is because she doesnt want him to have to deal with the shame like she has to. She chooses not to leave the village because she wants to be forgiven by taking full responsibilty and handling the punishment. I think she is justified because it shows she has a very good character by not turning in the real father and taking her punishment in full.

  10. Dimmesdale is a young minister who publically chastises hester. He also tries to get Hester to give up the name of the father. Chillingworth is hester's husbands made up name and he comes to see hester. Hester is a young woman who has committed adultry and is pregnant and is burdened by wearing a golden and scarlet A. Hester refuses to give up the name of the father because she doesnt want him to be introuble and also she loves him still and knows what will happen to him if she tells. She doesnt leave the village because she has always lived there and thinks if she stays and does good work she can clean herself of the crime and be free of it. I think she is justified in her actions because everyone deserves a second chance.

  11. Dimmesdale is a young minister who is renowned for his eloquence, religious fervor, and theological expertise. Chillingsworth is Hester's undercover husband. Chllingsworth and Dimmesdale meet and talk about Hester. Hester is the one wearing the scarlet letter A. She has the A because she committed adultery. She doesnt confess because she wants the child to do it herself. I do think that she is being jusitified because she is stepping up to the plate and taking care of her actions.

  12. Dimmesdale is a young and very highly respected minister for the town, and is also most likely the father of Hesters daughter Pearl. Chillingsworth is a fake name used for Hesters Husband that stayed over seas while Hester Prynne came over seas to Massachusetts. This situation is both Hester and Chillingworths fault because he stayed in Europe while she headed over to Massachusetts. Its also her fault that she didnt stay faithful to her husband even if he did leave her for two years. She doesnt leave the village afterwards because she wants to finish out the punishment that was given to her so she can become sinless in her and gods eyes. Her actions are justified only due to the fact that she is trying to fit in to the puritan society. It does show that she is courageous though that shes not going to run from any challenge and prove that she is a good christian.

  13. Dimmesdale is a young and smart minister, Chillingsworth is assumed to be Hester's old husband who stayed in England. And Hester is an attractive young women who had an affair and is now a mother because of it. Chillingsworth was unable to keep his wife Hester happy so she ran to the colonies, where she had an affair and was impregnated by Dimmesdale. The situation is Hester's fault as well as Chillingsworth's. It's Chillingsworth's fault because he was unable to keep his wife happy, but it is also Hester's because she was the one who got herself pregnant. I find her actions irresponsible but justified because she is taking responsibility for her actions.

  14. Dimmesdale is a powerful speaker and a compassionate leader. He is a minister and is respected. He tries to convince Hester to tell everyone who the real father is. He seems to sound like he has some characteristics of the baby, Pearl. Chillingworth is Hesters husband in disguise. He tries to get the name of the real dad from Hester in jail. He represents true evil and is out to seek revenge. Chillingworth is the one to blame because he left his wife and put her in the position she is in now. Hester is the woman who is being mocked and humiliated in public eyes for commiting adultery with an unknown man and is now bearing a child. Now she has to forever wear an embroidered A on her chest. She does not want to confess the real father because she wants her to seek a heavenly father and not an earthly one. Hester does not leave the village because she believes she can deal with the consequences from the crime she committed. I think she is justified of her actions because she is dealing with the crime in an approppriate way and is not running away from her problems. She also wants to prove to everyone that she is not the evil person everyone thinks she and Pearl is.

  15. Dimmesdale is a young man known for highly for his religious fervor and experience in theology. Chillingsworth is Hester's husband who hadn't seen Hester for two years. Hester is an attractive woman who had an affair with Dimmesdale, thus making her an adultress. Therefore she is forced to wear the Scarlett letter A for the rest of her life as punishment. She is also the mother of Pearl, a beautiful girl, who disrespects authority. Hester doesn't confess because she wants Pearl to seek a heavenly father not an earthly one. Hester doesn't leave the village because she knows she has sinned and is accepting her punishment. She isn't running, but instead accepts her fate. I think she is justified in her actions because she is being responsible and making the best of things without complaining or making excuses.

Hester is young and beautiful, and as we find out, had the affair with Dimmesdale. She does not confess the name of the father because she wants to protect his identity. Her reasons for not leaving the village I think are justified because even though she wears the mark of a sinner she wants to make things right in the village.

  20. Dimmesdale is a minister who lectures Hester the young beautiful, lady like, woman who commits adultery. She refuses to reveal who the father of the child is. Although we figure out that Dimmesdale is the father. Chillingworth turns out to be the husband of Hester who has come to America from England. He stayed in England while Hester traveled to America. I think all three of them should be blamed for this situation, they all did something dumb to cause this problem. Hester will not reveal who the father is of the child because she doesn’t want to father to be in trouble for what he did. It seems like she doesn’t want her baby to have a father. She does not leave the village after she leaves jail because she wants to stay true to her home, the place where she made this baby. She wants to prove herself to the town and redeem herself for what she did. I believe her actions are justified because she is taking responsibility for her actions, and not running away from the problems she causes for herself. She is showing major maturity.

She refuses to name him and it later turns out to be Dimmesdale. Chillingsworth comes to treat her in prison and is revealed as her estranged husband. All parties are to blame in this situation. Dimmesdale and Hester should have never committed adultry but Chillingsworth should have not left Hester in the first place. Hester does not leave the village because she is punishing herself. I believe she is justified in her actions she is taking resposibility and is using her time to sew for the poor as well as make the lastest fashion for people in high society.

Hester is a gorgeous woman who cheated on her husband and is marked with the scarlet letter. Chillingworth is Hester's husband, and Dimmesdale is the guy who Hester cheated on her husband with. I think they are all to blame because they each played a part in the adultery act. She doesn't confess the name because she didn't want anyone to blame him. Therefore she was protecting him. She does not leave because she wants to be reconciled for her sins so that she can be admitted to heaven. I do believe she is justified in her actions because she is taking her punishment and staying with her problems rather than running away from them which then would just probably follow her. She also is trying to follow her Puritan values.

She doesn't say the father's name because she doesn't want to trouble him. She also won't run away because if she did, she would be seen as a coward by running away from the ridicule. Hester does not reveal the name of her childs father because she does not want to trouble Chillingsworth. Instead of running away from her mistakes like a coward. She stays and faces her own mistakes proving how strong of a woman she is by facing her own consequences.

  34. Dimmedale is describe as a smart, respectful and young minister in Boston, who tried to persued Hester to confess who the father of the child is, which is himself. Chillingsworth is a fake name for Hester's husband who's from England; he usedisguise as a medical assistant of his wife in the prison; and meanwhile he's trying to find out who is the father of his wife's child. Hester is the wife of Chillingsworth, lover of Dimmedale. She commited adultury with Dimmedale. 35. Dimmesdale is a young, smart minister. He is also Hester's lover and father of her child. Hester is known around the town as being promiscuous young woman. Chillingworth is Hester's husband, who was captured back in Europe for a good amount of time. Dimmesdale makes a public effort to try to get Hester to say the name of the father(which is actually his child) even though she wants to protect his identity. Hester says in the village I believe to try to makes things right for herself and for her husband, but also doesnt leave because she has no where else to go.

  36. Hester is described as a adultery-commited woman. Chillingsworth is the false name of Hester's former husband, and Dimmedal is the town minister who helps Hester. Hester dosent confess the name of her childs father because she wants her daughter to have a holy or hevanly father. Hester dosent leave the village because it is her home and she chooses to live in an abdanon cabin on the outskirs of town. I belive her actions were bad because in purtian socity breaking the commandment was a very seroius issue and she should know better. It is her duty to stay free from sin and she didnt follow that!

  37. Dimmesdale is a smart minister who from the context led me to believe he is the father. By the way he speaks to Hester on the scaffold and when he says " she will not speak ". I believe he almost wants her to say his name and he can't bare to see her suffer. Chillingsworth is Hester's husband, he says that they are both to blame but he holds vengence on whom ever the father is. Hester doesn't confess the fathers name because she wants the baby to have a heavenly father and not and earthly one. She live in the village because the crime was committed therebso shebbelieves the punishment should surlong there as well. I believe her actions are justfied because she is not running away from her punishment she is facing it, which is her character she makes herself feel so guilty and makes her punishment worse then it is through her own guilt and self inflicted punishment.

  38. Dimmesdale is described as a young minister who is not very sure of himself. He tries to convince Hester to reaveal the father of her child. Hester refuses to do that because she knows he will be subjected to some sort of punishment for what he has done. Hester is described as a young woman that everyone thinks poorly of because she committed adultery. Chillingorth is described as an old man and seems very angry. He is Hester's husband but refuses to publicly admit that because he doesn't want to live with the shame of having a wife that cheated on him. Once Hester is released from prison she wants to deal with the consequences of her actions and not run away from them so she stays in the village. She is justified in doing so because she is trying to make up for her mistake by taking responsibility and not running away.

  39. Hester is an elegant, lady-like woman. Everybody looks down on her because of what she has done and has to wear a scarlet letter because of her actions. Dimmesdale is her young pastor who has religious fervor and seems astray with himself. Chillingworth is Hester's husband and comes to her in jail wanting to know the father's name but she won't confess. She doesn't confess who the father is because she wants the baby to have a heavenly father instead of an earthly one and stays in the village to make things right in the town and not running away from her sin. She is justified with her actions because she isn't running away and trying to forget about what she did but wants to learn from it.

  40. Dimmesdale is a very educated and knowledgeable young minister, that gave a speech to Hester while she is on the scaffold, in order to get her to confess the name of the Father. He, in reality, is the father of Hester’s baby. Chillingworth was Hester’s husband, who is oddly dressed, and stayed in England while Hester went to America. Hester is beautiful, young, and very lady-like. Chillingworth is the one to blame because he failed to keep his gorgeous young wife happy, thus resulting in her turning to other men. Sometimes i find fault in her actions, because she didn’t have to go to other men, but then again, if Chillingworth would have taken care of her, that wouldn’t have to happen. She never confesses the name of the father because i believe she wanted to protect that man’s name, whoever it truly was, and the fact that she wanted the baby’s father to be no earthly father, but rather, the Father in heaven. I think she is justified in her choice to stay in town for two reasons. One, she screwed up in this town, so i think she wants to stay so she can fix her problems where she started them. And two, the baby’s father is there so she probably thinks it only fair to stay.

  41. As described in the book, Dimmesdale is a intelligent, young, and rich minister. He publicly humiliates Hester who commited adultry, for not informing the rest of society who she had slept with. Chillingsworth is Hester's husband in disguise. I believe all of them are accountable for their relationship because of the actions they have done. Hester doesn't tell Dimmesdale the name of the father she slept with because she doesn't want her child to have a father. Hester doesn't leave the village because the crime was committed there so she believes the punishment should stay there as well. I think her actions are justified because she is what appears to be an incredible women in the inside and the outside who doesn't run away from her problems and she confronts them and deals with them in the best way she can. She decided to simply deal with her punishment and its consequesnces.

  43. Dimmesdale is a young but well respected minister who is supposedly a very intelligent person. He heavily puts down Hester for commiting adultory (which is a very bad crime in this point in time) and somewhat trys to force her to tell the names of the people she slept with. Chilingworth is Hester's husband. Chilingworth is to blame because of the poor conditions he kept in the house and he was unable to keep his wife happy. Hester does not confess because she doesn't want the baby to find out later in life. She was very brave by staying in town to face her consequences and should have been given much credit for it.

  44. In the beginning Dimmesdale is referred to as an intelligent young minister who lectures Hester, a beautiful young maiden, on announcing who the father of the child is. Even though Dimmesdale is the true father of Hester’s child, I believe that Chillingworth is to blame for Hester’s adultery. While Chillingworth, Hester’s real husband who came over from England, demands that Hester does not reveal the father’s name because he wants to find out who the father is all on his own. Hester refuses to reveal the true name of the father because she does not want him to have the same punishment as she does. Plus, she feels that by staying in Boston with the constant reminder of the sin she committed will be her punishment for herself. I believe that Hester is justified for her actions because Boston is her home and her daughter Pearl’s home. Even though they are outcasts they still belong to the society. She stays in the village because she feels she has to face what she did instead of running away.

  45. Dimmesdale is said to be an intelligent minister who questions Hester while she is on the scaffold, trying to announce the name of the father of her child, even though he himself is the father. Chillingworth is the true husband of Hester that stayed in Europe while she moved to America. I believe he is to blame for the audultry because he was not there to satisfy Hester while she was alone in the new world. She does not confess the name of the father because she does not what him to bare the same mark of shame as herself. She does not leave the town because she wants her child to be near its father and because she still love him.

  46. Dimmsdale is one of the ministers in the story and is the one who questions Hester when she is in the town. Chillingsworth is a doctor in the village and turns out to be the husband that Hester cheated on. She does not say the name because she knows that Chillingsworth will probably kill him. Hester cannot leave town because she feels that when something significant happens, then you become attatched to it and don't want to leave it behind.

  47. Dimmsdale is a minister, he questions Hester while she is on the scaffold. He tries to get her to tell the name of the child, even though ironically he is the father. Chillingsworth is Hester's husband, he is a doctor. Hester is a women who had an affair with another man and had a baby while her husband was not there. Hester stays in the town because she thinks that she should stay where the baby's father is. I believe that her actions are justified.

  48. Dimmesdale, being the intelligent man that he is, prods at Hester to confess the name, knowing very well that he is the father of Pearl. No one would suspect. Hester is young, pretty, and lonely. And Chillingworth, Hesters husband in disguise, is no more to blame than Dimmesdale or Hester. All three made mistakes that capitalized on the others mistake. However, Dimmesdale is an ordained man, and should be able to atleast rise above the temptation.

  49. Dimmesdale is a bright, intelligent, young minister who attended school in Europe. He gives Hester a speech while she is on the scaffold, trying to get her to announce who the father of her child is. Chillingsworth is the village doctor, and turns out to be Hester's husband of whom she cheated on. She refuses to tell the name because she fears he will do something to hurt the father. Who is at fault here? Hester and Dimmesdale.

  50. In the chapter the young minister Dimmesdale is described as an angel, Chillingsworth as a intellectual man, wearing a mix of Indian and European clothing and a physical deformity, and Hester as a beautiful women with a perfect complection. During Hester's punishment she is repeatidly asked to reveal the name of the father but refuses, she does this as to not stain the reputation of the young minister Dimmesdale in which she had the affair with. Her were not justified, just because the condition of your husband is unknown does not mean you have the right to have an affair, regardless of time.
