Chapters 9 & 10
The authorities ordered Hester Prynne to wear an A as a punishment for her adultery, but nobody told her to make it as beautiful and elaborate as she did. The elegance of the A she embroidered revealed her self-pride, even in the face of her public shame. Can you think of any similar symbols that people wear today? In what ways do people change their appearance to show self-pride, even when others see those changes as sources of shame? What do our outward symbols say about us?

Some similar symbols that people wear today are tattoos. Some tattoos show if someone is in a gang or something that represents them that they would like to show off. Some ways that people change their appearance to show self pride are that people sometimes change their style of clothing which makes them look like what their personality or hobbies are about. For instance if someone has a cowboy hat on and some jeans and boots then maybe they like country music and going hunting or fishing. Others might see this as something they dislike but they don't care because they have self-pride. Our outward symbols show what our hobbies are, what sports might play, or even what music we listen to.
ReplyDeleteMany symbols that people were these days are obvious ones like tattoos and graphic shirts. Some tattoos show peoples personalities, for instance a musician with tattoos would have an instrument or music notes; or a biker might have a skull or a motorcycle.People show their self-pride in alot of ways; for example someone with tattoos don't cover them up, or they wear sweat pants and a t-shirt because they arnt trying to impress anyone, or people blast their music from their cars because they like their music not because they care what we think about it. Outward symbols show everything, what we're like, how we act, or even what we are interested in. They express who we are individually.
ReplyDeleteSimilar to the way people dress to impress, some people like to do the exact opposite. For example, a guy that's into punk rock would wear torn up clothes perhaps, or things that would represent his style or stature. Even though in the corporate setting, it's viewed as lower class, or "dirty", it's the persons decision to show pride in what they enjoy. Also, hairstyles can be a way of expressing things. Some people may see it as crazy, or inappropriate, but to you, it's just right, and it shows who you really are.
ReplyDeletetattoos has got to be one of these symbols. Tattoos, and brandings (another form of body art) were once markings of outlaws, criminals, heathens, and other low lifes. Now, being interested in becoming a tattoo artist myself,I see these tattoo's and other forms of body art as self expressions, ways to remember the past, and simply a way to wear our souls literally on our sleeve. And just like Hester didnt cover up her A for adultry, neither do any of my ink'd friends cover their tattoo's. Its who they are.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are convicted and placed in jail the convicts sometimes get tattoos to show that they have been in jail. To some people, in some societies, this shows pride in what they have done, but in other societies the tattoos are looked on as shameful. Also, the way you dress shows your self-pride. You can also see pride or shame in people's body language. If someone is slouching and not making eye contact with anyone, it can be seen as shame, but if someone has good posture and a personality, then you see pride in them.
ReplyDeleteA common change of apperance people do to show there pride is change there hair style. More commonly neonazi's and "skinheads" commonly shave there heads to show pride amongst themselves even when in outside society it is looked down upon. Outword symbolds show what we belive in and how we feel up it.
ReplyDeletePeople mostly use how they dress, young people especially. What is considered shameful to older people is what kids are more likely to gravitate towatds because its all they can do to separate themselves from the prvious generation. take Visual Kei for and example. 30 years ago there wasnt much diversity in music and styles of dress in Japan. But within the last 20 years the Visual Kei movement has started and become very popular, with its ecentric costumes, hair, and music. Its main audience in young people, who in Japan recently have been pushing even harder then kids here in America to diferentiate themselves from the previous generations.
ReplyDeleteToday, people choose to wear symbols such as tatoos with certain meanings and also clothing, which tells a lot about a person. People change their appearances to fit their lifestyles. For example, we all go through phases of what we like to wear. Once we find that right look, we stick with it. People show pride in what they like, and don't let the views of others stop them. Our outward symbols tell everything about us; about who we are, what we like to do, and how we act, and most importantly, what we believe in.
ReplyDeleteSymbols such as the A Hester had to wear today could be interpreted as funky hairstyles and dramatic dress. If someone is dressed in all black and has a two foot purple mohawk they scream look at me. At the same time they are putting out this I dont care what you think and I wont conform attitude. Our outward symbols are ways of showing people who we are and what we are about. Our hair and clothing choices help others interpret how we want to be perceived.
ReplyDeleteSome obvious symbols people wear today are tatos and certian type of clothings. People somtimes use tatos to show religous belifs and many other things. People also dress certian ways to show pride in what they believe. Like someone wearing a football tshrt obviously is showing pride in football and athletics, some people might not like football or belive in athletics but by wearing this tshirt your showing that you have pride and dont care what they think. Our out ward symbols is a way of showing what we belive, who we are, and what we like.
ReplyDeleteIn our culture today people tend to want to individualize their style. People sometimes use clothing to show who they are and what they enjoy. Some others who disagree with what the people who are dressing to individualize themselves are trying to say and they tend to look down upon these people. People also will get tattoos for a variety of reasons. Some people use tattoos to express themselves, some in remembrance to others, and some to show their commitment to something such as gang members or husbands to have a permanent symbol for their love for their wives or kids. Some people disagree with the idea of having a tattoo because they believe it is wrecking your appearance while others believe that it is a canvas just waiting to be drawn on. Everyone has their own symbol to show that they are different even if not everyone agrees with how they portray it.
ReplyDeleteThe symbols that people in our society wear can very as much from tatoos to shirts showing pride of a team you participated on or even who your favorite celebrity is currently. In Gangs and african tribes, it is very common to get tatoos, or your skin scarred to show your achievements and status in the group. The common person most commonly looks down at these people who have tons of extravagant artwork on there body and believe that it is shameful. The people with the tatoos though believe it is prideful to show there accomplishment and status in there culture group. Outward symbols for us can show anything from what athletic teams we competed on, what school we go to, family, our favorite hobbies and even what our favorite brand name logos are.
ReplyDeleteIn today's society, people like to express themselves in different ways like having tatoos or clothing that represents something. You could have a tatoo that reps a gang or the Army and whatnot. Many people also dress the part by wearing sports shirts, shirts about different bands, or shirts with Obama on it.
ReplyDeleteIn today's society people express themselves with body art or tatoos. These tatoos can represent anything we choose. They can be a symbol of a gang or a reminder of a good time. A person can hide their tatoo by covering it with clothes; however, it will always be there to remind us about the past. A tatoo depending on what it is can show a lot about a person.
ReplyDeleteIn our society there are many symbols which describe a persons individuality. Tattoos
ReplyDeleteand clothing are the most common. Tattoos use to be symbols of gangs and street people, now people have tattoos that symbolize their passion in something or loved ones. Clothing also seperates people from one another for example different gangs have bandanas, which are different colors
which symbolize who they represent.
In today's society there are many symbols that represent individuality. For example tattoos or piercings are just some. Tattoos can act as a memorial for someone who has died or to represent a gang they are in. Piercings can be a way to express a person's sense of style. Although everyone may not agree with how people express their styles. People have these symbols for themselves and it represents who they are or who they've become.
ReplyDeleteSome symbols today that are used to show self-pride when they are seen as public shame are style of dress. Usually, people are visually judged by how they appear and the quality of clothing they are wearing. But today, people sometimes dress scragly or grungy because that's their style. They wear ripped jeans and grungy shirts, not because they cannot afford nicer clothes, but because thats they way they want to dress.
ReplyDeletePeople wear different symbols such as tatoos and signs for cancer and peace. Those symbols show what people believe in. Also a good example of people changing their appearance would be homosexuality. They intend to wear clothes that reveal the kind of person they are. Another example are punk looking people. They wear clothes that are torn rather than preps who wear tight clothes. Our outward symbols tells others who we are and what our beliefs are. It's a way of expression.
ReplyDeleteOutward symbols are a way to express individuality. They can reflect a persons personality, beliefs, or likes/dislikes. Although some people may view certain symbols as shameful, other people choose to wear them because they like them. Tattoos are considered by some people to be vulgar or shameful but people get them all the time. Piercings are looked at the same way as tattoos. Some people want to wear these symbols even though sometimes others look down on them for it.
ReplyDeleteHaving a tattoo was once thought to be vulgar, and still is by some, yet many people wear them today to show off their pride in something they're interested in. For example, a soldier might have a tattoo of which branch of the military they joined regardless of whether or not you like the military of not. The outward symbols we wear show off our personality and our interests.
ReplyDeleteA symbol that most people put on themselves showing self-pride might be tattoos. These show somthing that represents them or they just find it attractive enough to put on their body. They have pride in what it looks like and represents so they what to show it off to the world to see. Our outward symbols might represent what we find joy in or what our personalities might exemplify.
ReplyDeleteTatoos are the symbols of today. They express diversity as well as culture and beliefs that one has. Whether people like them or not it still expresses that person. Although there are many different symbols such as piercings, tatoos will forever be the favorite of the American people.
ReplyDeleteBody art is something people do to show they're not ashamed to show themselves to the public eye, and to show how confident they are. A cartain style, or the way people dress is another example. Some people may view this as disturbing, but to others, its a great way to show people who you really are.
ReplyDeleteSymbols of self pride today can be anything. From tattoos to garments. Someone may have tattoos to show what they have done in life or memories of others who have influenced them. And somebody who is not valued highly in society may wear high fashioned clother to try to level the playing field. Our symbols say that we try our best to stay strong or if we just give up. Also they can show what we think or if we care about what others say or think about us
ReplyDeleteMany people these days want to stand out from the crowd and be there own person. They express that idea through many different outlets. Many people get elaborate tatoos all over their bodys to express their individuality. Some people in society do look down upon it and think it is not very appropriate. Another symbol people sometimes get to stand out would be piercings. This too is sometimes looked down upon. These modern day symbols can help eximplify individuality, and confidence.
ReplyDeleteSimiliar symbols in today's society would be one's clothing or accesories that he or she chooses to wear. For example someone who has faith in christianity would wear a necklace with a cross on it. When people want to show some self-pride, they would wear something that truly describes what they stand for. For instance, soccer fans or basketball fans wear jerseys that would represent the team they support. Outward symbols show who we are, and what we represent in society. They are what we stand for and what we believe in.
ReplyDeleteDifferent symbols people use today to stand out are tattoos and sports apparel. People who wear tattoos like the way they look, but most people who don't have tattoos see them as a negative image. Another example of this is with sports. Some people wear clothes that represent a sports team that someone else may not like. The person wearing it looks at it one way while the other person looks at it negatively.
ReplyDeleteI think a similar symbol would have to be tattoos. People get tattoos for things they like or represent. For example, if they are in a gang, they would get a gang related tattoo. Convicts get tattoos to represent the time they spent in jail. To them it shows pride, to society it is shameful and frowned upon. I think our outward symbols show how we feel about ourselves and is an expression of who we are as people.
ReplyDeleteSome similar symbols could be tatoos, piercings, and all kinds of different stuff. Tatoos can be used to identify those people who are possibly in gangs, or just feel like having a tatoo. But no matter what anyone says to them they'll be prideful of it. Clothing is another big way that people show self-pride. It can be used to identify what music you like or what sports you play, it can even show off your personality. Our outward symbols show and express to others who we are and what we stand for.
ReplyDeleteSymbols of today's society would be things such as tatoos, piercings, and clothing. To show self pride means to show what you believe in. People change their clothes to represent what they believe or stand for. People proud of america wear red white and blue; gator fans wear blue and orange and etc etc. Our outward symbols show our true colors and show who we really are and what we care about.
ReplyDeleteOutward symbols show that you are not scared to show that you are not perfect. I think that when she wore the Scarlet letter the way that she did she was saying that she made a mistkae but something good was going to come out of it. I think today some symbols that poeple wear could be the pink ribbon saying that you had breast cancer or you support finding the cure. Another would be in gangs they show bandanas to show that they are from that chosen gang. Showing pride and brotherhood.
ReplyDeleteSymbols similar to Hester's scarlet letter A are things such as tattoos or the different styles of clothing people wear. People wear different styles because everyone is different and has their own personality. Sometimes people wear clothing like short skirts and low cut shirts or black baggy jeans with black shirts which can show what kind of person we are.
ReplyDeleteWithin the recent decades the wearing of a hijab has become a symbol of persecution and intolerance in American society. People change their appearance despite others view because of beliefs and our outward appearances symbolizes these beliefs such as religeon, societal, and political.
ReplyDeletePeople show self pride through many ways such as clothing, jewlery, tatoos, percings, and even haircuts. Tatoos are one of the biggest and most controversial ways people show self pride. Many people get tatoos to show pride of religion, race, personal beliefs, or past experiances. Yet many people believe tatoos are a form of defacing your body or defying God because they beleive humans are born in his image. I know that some jewish cemetaries will not bury a body if it has a tatoo. Outward symbols can symbolize anything from your family to your favorite serial. One thing all forms of outward expression shows is that the person whom they are on enjoys expressing themselves.
ReplyDeleteSimilar symbols to show pride, like Hester did with the elegance of the A, would be tattoos, types of clothing, and piercings. People who use these ways to express themselves have a lot of pride. People find what fits them and then go with that. Whether a shirt with your favorite rapper on it or a new hairdo to show what style your into at the moment you are still expressing yourself. With tattoos you have to have a lot of pride being that you just got a permenent symbol of something in your life. I think outward symbols say alot about what kind of person you are.
ReplyDeleteSymbols are a way for people to express their views, show their pride in something or show what they believe. For example, someone might wear a shirt or get a tattoo of the country they are from to express their love for the country. People might change their appearence to stand up for their beliefs. Our outward appearence can show others how we feel, what we believe in, or show our pride for something.
ReplyDeletePeople today pierce, or tatoo their bodies. They also change there appearances with different clothing and haircuts. This shows their individuality and their self pride. The kind of appearances that people portray about themselves is how they want to be seen by other people and it shows their personality.
ReplyDeleteSome symbols that are today are tattoos. One significant tattoo is the teardrop that is under one or both of the eyes. An empty teardrop tattoo signifies that you have lost a a friend or loved one, or that they have killed someone. Some people may wear their hair a certain way to show self-pride. Outward symbols say that the person is not afraid or embarrassed of what they are wearing or how the looking. Their self-pride is the reason for that.
ReplyDeleteI believe one of the present day symbols are tattoos. A tattoos may be a visual representation of one's dark past or beliefs. Some tattoo's can resemble the scarlet letter as some show the time spent in jail. Tattoo's can be flaunted to show self image by the abundance of them or location as though everyone can see it.
ReplyDeleteDifferent symbols in the world today are tattoos, dramatic dress, religious jewelry (such as crosses), and uniforms. People show self pride by expressing themself with body art. Some people look upon it as creating a beautiful work of art when others believe its destroying their body. Regardless, it is what the person wanted to do with their body to show something that is a symbol to them. Outward symbols show people that that person is proud of their symbol and isn't afraid to let everyone know it. It shows who you are as a person as well.
ReplyDeleteToday, people choose to wear symbols such as tatoos with certain meanings and also clothing, which tells a lot about a person. People change their appearances to fit their character. For example, we all go through phases of what we like to wear. Once we find what we like, we typically stick with that look. People show off what they wear and don't let the opinons of others affect their outward appearance if it is truly a description of them. Our outward symbols tell everything about us; such as what we believe in, and things we like and people that are close to us, and much more.
ReplyDeleteSimilar symbols compare to Hester that today people wear will be tattoo. Some people think tattoo as a showing of fashion; some use it to represent something they like or they don't like; some use it as memorial of someone they might have lost or an event they want to remember. Meanwhile, the way people dress says a lot about them. Some people use the the style of their clothes as a change of their mood.
ReplyDeleteToday people find a way to express themselves through symbols such as tatoos. They can express pride in a specif thing that a person has done in thier life. Some people see these symbols as repolsive but others see the meaning of this artform. The symbols that we carry around with us helps us express our individuality.
ReplyDeleteIn movies, I've seen people on house arrest wear their bans in some of the most silliest places. They try to make it as a fashion statement but it almost doesn't even work. You still see the shame no matter where you hide it, and what you may make of it. Outward symbols show shame and low pride.
ReplyDeleteThe way people dress is a way to express their individuality. It reflects thier beliefs and/or personality. The clothes people wear sometimes are considered by people to be nasty. This is a way for people to express them selves and others want to change them.
ReplyDeleteMany people today use clothing to represent their individuality. Some people wear a cross to represent their religion while others scorne this because their religion is different. Tattoos sometimes represent a persons past or their affiliation with a gang. Other people believe this is ruining your body and look poorly upon people that do have tattoos. People us this as a way to express themselves and separate themselves from others.
ReplyDeletePeople today dress in shirts showing what they believe in our the attitude they want to portray. People choose what they dress in by there lifestyle. Our outward symbol shows what we are trying to portray and what we are trying to be in life.
ReplyDeleteSimilar symbols that people wear today are mainly clothing, designs, and tattoos. Some people cut their hair to show self-pride just like Britney Spears did; even though people thought it was stupid. That's one way people change their appearance for self-pride. Our outward symbols show what we are like, our interests, and just a description as us as a person.
ReplyDeletePeople these days want to stand out from the crow be the outgoing one and be their own person. they express the idea through many diffrent outlets. Many of them get tatoos to show their personality, some people find tatoos of something the low class would do. while others just do it becuase they have money.
ReplyDeletePeople today associate themselves in groups by tattoos and clothing. Some people even get tear drops on their faces showing the number of people they have killed. Some people get earrings to promote their sexual preference. Even some people change their dress by wearing eagles, seagulls, and moose on their clothing in order to "fit in". Then some people try to stand out by mix matching shoes and wearing funky out fits. Some tattoos and outfits also resemble their membership with a gang. Its their own decision, but by what they wear or have on them people can tell what their trying to express.
ReplyDeleteI think religious symbols like crosses or the star of David shows our self-pride, but not shame. An example of pride and shame is the wearing of a sports team, after a bad loss. It really shows that you still support the team even after they lost. The shame of the loss, but the pride of the team.
ReplyDeleteThe clothes the people wear symbolize who they are. If they dress horrible, they will be treated badly just because the people judge them on what they wear.
ReplyDelete
